Mercury are the leaders in renewable energy in New Zealand and believe in making energy more wonderful for all New Zealanders.

To promote this vision, Mercury launched a major campaign across New Zealand. And, the star of the campaign — Evie, the world's first electric Ford Fairlane, an iconic and precious part of their brand.

Our challenge: how do we give the general public the opportunity to get behind the wheel and take Evie for a spin themselves while experiencing all that Mercury offers?

A virtual adventure

Our idea was to use virtual reality to create an immersive social experience — allowing up to four passengers to share a virtual journey in the real 1957 Ford Fairlane.

Our team of artists recreated the car meticulously in 3D to be millimetre perfect. While sitting in the car with a VR headset you can reach out to find the steering wheel, doors, and even the other passengers are exactly where you expect them to be.

We created a dynamic, virtual city full of familiar Kiwi landmarks to explore, whilst a well paced narrative tells the story of Energy Made Wonderful and highlights the benefits of renewable energy as you sit back and enjoy the ride. The experience runs in real-time, with cars and people navigating the world around you.

A wonderful outcome

Our virtual journey was enjoyed at large scale events and venues all over New Zealand, providing a truly unique, immersive, and multi-sensory experience to visitors.

Following a grand tour of the country, Virtually Wonderful found a permanent home in the Mercury offices.
