The ocean is vibrant and full of life, but the depths can be a dark and mysterious place, having evolved and transformed through time in ways only imaginable.

Home to ancient creatures that have existed through the ages, many more species are confined to history. Several of these creatures live at depths of the ocean impossible for us to reach and have never been seen with the human eye - existing on a scale that’s hard to comprehend

Starting with an open brief and given a space as a blank canvas, SEA LIFE Melbourne challenged Method to do the impossible and bring these creatures to life within the walls of their aquarium to inspire wonder amongst visitors

A deep dive through the oceans of time

With creative freedom, our idea was to take visitors on an unexpected journey to the depths of the ocean. From the sunlit shallows of the present day, rich with colourful marine life — travelling all the way down to the mysterious depths of the ocean trench and back to prehistoric times for a glimpse of how, now extinct, sea creatures may have inhabited the waters.

What appears at first glance to be another underwater tank is a 14-metre wall-to-wall projection illuminating an entire space within the aquarium — a window to a world beneath the waves that immerses visitors through five unique zones, each home to different groups of sea creatures. Rendered in real-time, each journey is unique, with variations in how creatures move and interact, as well as the events that occur.

The outcome

With what started as a blank canvas, SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium can now welcome visitors to a bespoke, unique experience that uses creative technology to bring new life to an underutilised space within the aquarium.

This in turn provides visitors a wondrous, grand experience with the opportunity to see something like never before — deep sea creatures that would be truly impossible to see in the real world.
